Okay—before I explain how to play, let me quickly tell you what this game actually is.

I grew up playing interactive gamebooks like Fighting Fantasy and Lone Wolf. They got me hooked on reading, which eventually led to me running my own interactive fantasy theatre for five years. WE did pretty well, two TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice awards, and loads of happy audience members. But I wanted to get the experience out to more than the number of people I could cram in my theatre, so I designed the first Storymaster’s Tales Game, Weirding Woods, Dracodeep Dungeons and Threatlore Town.

Three gamebooks, "Threatlore Town," "Weirding Woods," "Dracodeep Dungeon," displayed with candles. Text promotes Amazon sales. Dark, mysterious mood.

They’re available on Amazon if you are interested. Anyway, these new Quest books take it even further. Having created loads of new stories for both my live-action version and online shows, I wanted to also get those out to players worldwide.

These new Quests include everything that worked so well in my theatre and gamebooks. My goal? To give anyone, from total beginners to seasoned adventurers, a full roleplaying experience that’s:

  • Easy to learn

  • Quick to play

  • And immersive from the very first page

You won’t get bogged down with rulebooks or endless worldbuilding. It’s pick-up-and-play.In fact, these are the same games I use when running events for groups ranging from one person to over a hundred.

Oh—and yes, I’ve also included narrated soundscapes to help bring the world to life and guide you along the way.

Alright—let’s get into the nitty-gritty.

Here’s how to play The Quests

The rules are just 10 pages, but I’ll try to do this far more quickly.

Creating the Character

You will create a character, use the statistics in the rules, for instance, The Wizard’s Challenge, you are playing an apprentice, write the numbers down on the story log, there are only a few to track. Fighting Skill, Fighting Damage, Magic Craft, Fortune, Health and Gold, come up with an apt name, then set about your quest.

The Storymaster

If you are playing solo, you will also be the story master. If you are playing with others, either one person will read from the book, or you can all play and read for each other. It's that flexible. The Storymaster’s job is to breathe life into the quest, perform some voices, elaborate on the scenes, and ensure the players are following the rules. It's also up to them to decide when they want to bend or ignore the rules.

The Quest

The Quests are divided into Acts, much like a play or movie. Each act includes a description and four options for players to choose from. If you want to feel as if you're in one of our live shows, I’ve included QR codes that read this bit out and play “Atmospheric Music.”

You then select two actions for the players. For instance, if there is one player, they can choose two, or if there are two players, each selects one. If they choose the same action, they can pick another. If the first action renders the second action pointless, then disregard it. Ultimately, the Storymaster will need to narrate a story about what might be a logical outcome.

Fate or Fortune

Now, some of the actions might lead to rewards, combat, discoveries or something weird. If you get a roll of FATE, the player must roll a four-sided dice, also known as a D4, don’t have dice, then draw slips of paper from an ornate box. You might also be asked to roll your FORTUNE or under, remember that from the stats chat, well. That number goes down every time you roll it, so at some point your luck will run out… making things harder. Don’t worry, the book tells you when and what to roll as you go along, so you don’t have to go back to look at the rules very much.

Combat

Now combat! Grab your D6 (six-sided die). Let's say you have to fight a goblin. Both the player and the creature must roll a D6. Add this number to your Fighting Skill. Whoever gets the lowest number loses Health equal to the opponent's fighting damage. Most of the time, this will be by one point. Keep fighting until one of you dies, ending in 0 health. The hero decided to run away. This will reduce your health by one as the foe takes their final swing at your fleeing self. If you find yourself in Magical combat, you will be told, but it works in the same way, but your MAGIC CRAFT.

Now, all you need to do is try to get to the end of the quest without dying or failing in your primary mission. Well, that’s. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. There are a few new quests out now, so don’t forget this insanely generous 50% off code: QUESTS50. https://www.storymasterstales.com/questsstore This will take 50% of any or ALL the quests you have in your checkout.

Have fun and look out for more new quests coming soon.
